This weeks seminar had a focus on treatments, what they are and their purpose.

I learnt that a treatment sets out the dramatic and cinematic way you intend to 'treat' a story. It can add a sense of style to the unfolding story that is being told.

A few key points that I found interesting about treatments were:

  • A treatment is effectively a 'selling' document

  • They can articulate your imagination

  • Within it, you write what you see and hear for the story

  • It is an interpretation of the story which is favored by the director

Other points I took away from this seminar was that treatments may include photographs, videos, storyboards and sound design to convey and illustrate how you, as the director, see the story.

As a short task, we were asked to write the beginning of our own treatment for a scene we have in mind. I chose to write about a scene I have imagined for my Graduate Project.

With that in mind, to challenge myself and to increase my learning, this is something that I will continue, as it is very relevant in developing one of my skills in my learning agreement.

Since I would like to develop my story development/writing skills, I believe this will be a great starting point to help develop that skill.
