Our first week has got me thinking about what I would like to achieve this semester and what specific skills I would like to learn. The first seminar we had opened my mind up to new ideas on how different people see the role of director, as we discussed our individual thoughts on the matter in our group. Some ideas that stood out to me included:

  • The Director shares their interpretation of a script to the audience

  • The producer creates the space in which the director can "play"

  • Sometimes, Directing is not always about the storytelling, but getting the job done on time and to the brief

A recurring theme that came up was the relationship between the Director, Writer and Producer. This is something I explored in my Level 5 Specialisms unit and is something I will continue to explore this year as I have not only an interest in Directing, but also the Creative Producing/Writing side of Fictional Television. I have also reflected on other skills from my Level 5 unit which I wish to continue to learn which is listed below.

After some reflection, I believe I have some sort of clarity on 3 main skills I wish to focus on that I will add to my Learning Agreement:

  • Having less creative control as a Director and instead "getting the job done" to what a brief says. (This will include lots of Time Management)

  • Learning a role that is more of a "Creative Producer", which to me involves creating/writing ideas. (Something I first tried out in my final Level 5 project)

  • Working with Actors, as they are such an important part of a production. Being able to manage actors on set and get the best out of them for the project.
